How To Install Drop Spindles On Silverado
Permit me begin by thanking rice750sxi for posting his thread a year-and-a-half ago of the McGaughy's spindle install on his SS; that posting can exist found hither if y'all want more pics and perspective on doing this project. At that place is also a Collection of Lowering Notes and Best Practices pinned in the Suspension forum.
Shown here is the install of the McGaughy'due south deluxe front drop-spindle lowering kit, but these instructions will exist similar for other brands of lowering spindles as well. In addition, these instructions are very useful for doing your own major front-end work, similar replacing bushings, ball joints, or tie-rod ends.
Earlier beginning, you lot will need proper tools -
1) one/2" breaker bar and metric impact or deep sockets;
2) complete fix of metric combination wrenches;
3) 36mm deep socket (for axle nut);
four) T-55 Torx socket (for restriction caliper pins);
5) assortment of allen wrenches;
6) heavy sledge hammer (v-lb minimum);
7) grinder or hacksaw, and metal file;
8) contrasted mutual automotive paw tools (pliers, screwdrivers, etc);
9) canteen jack and approved jack stands.
I also prepared days alee by painting the spindles with black engine enamel and baking in the oven at 150-degrees, also as installing the upper bicycle hub stud supplied in the kit.
When post-obit these instructions, it is by and large almost efficient to do both sides at the same time. An intermediate-level mechanic can accomplish this job with the tools shown in 4-5 hours; novice mechanics should not require more a whole 24-hour interval.
The torsion-bar front end-end is much safer to piece of work with than a curlicue bound suspension, equally unloading the suspension by raising the vehicle will save all tension from the springs; on the contrary, when working on a coil-jump front end-end be sure to use a coil jump compressor to safely comprise the force of springs under pressure level - many have been seriously injured by mishandling curlicue springs.
